Biofuels are among the main choices for a viable, renewable, energy source. Its chief advantages lie in its environment-friendly characteristics, which is in accord with the philosophy and culture of elin.

More specifically, biodiesel is environment-friendly and renewable, as it comes from vegetable oils and / or animal fat. Its physical and chemical qualities make it perfectly suited for use in diesel engines and it is already widely used in a number of European countries. It fully complies with EU specifications on automotive diesel and has important advantages as an engine fuel, mainly with regard to the CO2 balance, reduction of fumes, better engine lubrication without sulfur and superior biodegradable qualities.

Biofuels are part of the core of the European Union energy policy, which has already made a number of decisions on their direct promotion. One of the measures taken by the EU is the establishment of an ambitious goal for 2010, namely that biofuels should represent 5.75% of all automotive fuels used in each member state. This goal has also been adopted by Greece.

Both the very encouraging results of the pilot sale of biodiesel in 1999-2000 and the alignment of such fuels with ELIN’s vision of the future, have led the company to the decision to produce biodiesel for sale on the market. In 2006, ELIN founded a subsidiary, ELIN Biofuels S.A., which focuses on the production and sale of biofuels. Currently, elin Biofuels owns and operates a state-of-the-art biodiesel production plant in Volos able to produce 40,000 tons of top quality Greek biodiesel per year.
